The difference between DUI and DWI. Find out here.

Have you ever heard of DUI? Or have you known someone who got caught and was charged with DUI? It is a serious crime to put it simply. DUI stands for Driving Under the Influence while the other term for this kind of crime is Driving While Intoxicated or DWI.

While others call this as Driving While Impaired. These terms can have different meanings, but these are all crimes and punishable by law in all fifty states across the United States. In any case, DUI and DWI means that the driver is being charged with a very serious offense which puts not just himself at risk for health and safety but also others because of driving a vehicle while being impaired either by alcohol or other intoxicating substances like recreational drugs or having prescription drugs that impair the ability of the driver to use the vehicle.

This is very important to understand that one cannot be worse than the other and both can still create a big effect in your life.

Each state in the United States have different definitions depending on the law of the state but still, both terms are applied to describe impaired or drunken driving while some state laws also refer to this kind of offense as drunken driving also.

Oftentimes, each state will refer one to alcohol while the other is the impairment by drugs or any known substance or the other way around depending on the state that is why the difference between DUI and DWI varies from state to state.

There are states that refer DWI to driving while intoxicated with alcohol which requires a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) test over the legal limit of alcohol level in a person’s body while DUI is used when the driver is caught under the influence of either drug or alcohol.

Regardless of the definition between DUI and DWI, it is one of the top causes of fatalities in the United States in terms of traffic-related accidents. In fact, over seventy-percent of the fatalities from car crashes are caused by drivers who are either caught to have DUI or DWI.
